Barack Obama was born in Honolulu, Hawaii on August 4, 1961. His mother, Ann Dunham, was a white American anthropologist, and his father, Barack Obama Sr., was an economist from Kenya.
Obama's parents got together at the University of Hawaii when they were both students. When Obama was two years old, they got divorced, and his mother subsequently remarried to Lolo Soetoro, an Indonesian.
Obama was raised primarily by his mother and grandparents in Honolulu throughout his early years. He was an outstanding student at the exclusive private Punahou School, where he was a standout athlete and scholar.
Following high school graduation, Obama relocated to Los Angeles in order to enroll at Occidental College. Two years later, he transferred to Columbia University and majored in political science.
